Unfortunately, Naked Eyes are remembered by a song that isn’t that great, but this gem from the duo’s 1983 debut Burning Bridges caught my attention immediately. It’s a bummer the whole album doesn’t sound like this.
Beach Fossils - Out in the Way (Featuring Jack Tatum)
“You don’t look the same as when I was dreaming.”
New favorite song alert. This tune layers atmospheric synth with hazy, harmonized, melodramatic vocals that bring new wave to a point of reinvention. Nu New Wave? I’ll just call it Nunuwave. This collaboration between Beach Fossils and Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing sounds like magic. Pure magic. You can find this song on their upcoming EP What a Pleasure being released on Captured Tracks.
Another great song to accompany the day’s mood. Double Denim is releasing 300 copies of “You Can” along with “Social Studies” which you can pre-order HERE.
Smooth guitar samples work best with sporatic clockwork synth vibes. Ghostly International is slated to reissue Cyanide Sisters on the 25th, so go get your hands on it.
I love this 80’s sound resurgence. Cut Copy, along with many bands popping up, take everything good from the decade and smash it with our twenty-ten mentality. “Take Me Over” blends some warm synth, popping percussion, and heartbreak vocals to make a sound reminiscent of acts like Yeasayer and Kisses. Be sure to grab this album when it comes out in February on Modular Recordings.
Twin Shadow has been my latest obsession. A perfect mix of synth, drum machine, and fuzzed out guitar all throughout his debut album “Forget”. They are currently on tour so if they’re stopping by your town, go out and give it a listen. Above is an acoustic rendition of “Slow” they did in Dijon, France for Faits Divers. Digging the shit out of Wynne using the drum pads.
John Jagos, otherwise known as Brothertiger, drops 5 minutes of lush, 80’s-esque synthpop in his latest release “Evening Glow”. This track definitely shares a closer feel to his previous release “Wind at My Back”, giving us a sound to highly anticipate in his upcoming full length release.
